The Hong Kong Police have opened a new unit dedicated to combating phone and email scams. Police statistics since 2013 have shown a steady rise in cybercrime of various types, and Police Commissioner, Stephen Lo Wai-chung declared his intention to focus on fighting cybercrime in 2015. Police Director of Crime & Security Sonny Au said that the Police Anti-Deception Co-ordination Centre will step up their actions against deception, raise public awareness, and strengthen co-ordination in fighting and preventing deception.
The centre already has a webpage with pages describing common email scams, telephone deceptions and other cybercrimes.
However, some of the advice offered may seem outdated. On the page about email scams, it advises, "Set proper passwords and change them regularly;", but the problems with frequent password changes are recognised by the UK's National Cyber Security Centre.
